Donald Lawrence is a gospel music songwriter, record producer, composer, and choir director. He was born on May 4, 1961, in Gastonia, North Carolina, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
Lawrence rose to prominence as the musical director and producer for The Tri-City Singers. He also served as a vocal coach for the R&B group En Vogue and as a musical director for Stephanie Mills. He owns the record label QuietWater Entertainment.
His recordings include the albums A Songwriter’s Point of View, Bible Stories, I Speak Life, and Goshen. Notable songs in his catalog include “The Blessing of Abraham,” “Encourage Yourself,” “Testify,” and “Deliver Me (This Is My Exodus).” The latter was named Billboard’s #1 Gospel Airplay Song of the Year for 2019. Lawrence has collaborated with artists such as Kirk Franklin, Karen Clark Sheard, Donnie McClurkin, and Mary J. Blige.
Over his career, Lawrence has won a Grammy Award in 2008, multiple Stellar Awards, and four Dove Awards. He was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2020.
