About Barnabas
Barnabas was a pioneering Christian hard rock and heavy metal band active from 1977 to 1986, originating from the Jesus movement. The group was founded in 1977 in southern California by Monte Cooley. Its name was chosen in honor of the New Testament disciple Barnabas.
Over their career, the band was based in various locations, including Los Angeles, Schaumburg (Illinois), Des Moines (Iowa), and Edmond (Oklahoma). The band’s final lineup included Nancy Jo Mann on vocals, Gary Mann on bass and keyboards, Kris Klingensmith on drums, and Brian Belew on guitar.
Barnabas recorded five studio albums during their active years: Hear the Light (1980), Find Your Heart a Home (1982), Approaching Light Speed (1983), Feel the Fire (1984), and Little Foxes (1986). A later release, The Gospel According to Barnabas, appeared in 1992. The group disbanded in 1986. Barnabas is recognized as an early band to bring a heavy metal sound to Christian music, helping to shape the genre during the late 1970s and 1980s.
