Meaning & Inspiration
“Sovereign Over Us” by Aaron Keyes is a worship song about trusting God in hard times. The opening says there is strength within the sorrow and beauty in tears, that God meets people in mourning with a love that casts out fear, and that He works in the waiting, even when His ways are beyond understanding.
The chorus is a statement of faith: His plans are still to prosper, He has not forgotten His people, and He is with them in the fire and the flood. It ends with “You are sovereign over us.” The fire and flood recall Isaiah 43:2, and the plans to prosper are close to Jeremiah 29:11.
