Lyrics

Verse 1

For a long time I've traveled
Down along a lonely road
My heart was so heavy
In sin I sank low
But then I heard about Jesus
What a wonderful hour

Refrain

I'm so glad that I found out
He could bring me out
With His saving power

Chorus

Thank God I am free free
From this world of sin
washed in the blood of Jesus
I've been born again
Hallelujah I'm saved
Saved saved by his wonderful grace

Verse 2

I'm so glad that I found out
He could bring me out
And show me the way
Like a bird out of prison
That's take its flight
Like a blind man that God gave back his sight
Like a poor wretched beggar who found fortune

Refrain

I'm so glad that I found out
He could bring me out
Through His Holy name

Chorus

Thank God I am free free
From this world of sin
washed in the blood of Jesus
I've been born again
Hallelujah I'm saved
Saved saved by his wonderful grace

Refrain

I'm so glad that I found out
He could bring me out
And show me the way

Chorus

Thank God I am free free
From this world of sin
washed in the blood of Jesus
I've been born again
Hallelujah I'm saved
Saved saved by his wonderful grace

Meaning & Inspiration

The Detty Sisters’ “Thank God I Am Free” is a testimony of freedom from sin. The first verse recalls a long, lonely road and a heavy heart in sin, then hearing about Jesus, “what a wonderful hour.” The refrain says the singer is glad to have found that He could bring the singer out with saving power.

The chorus gives the thanks: “washed in the blood of Jesus, I’ve been born again, Hallelujah I’m saved by His wonderful grace.” The second verse uses images of a bird out of prison, a blind man given back sight, and a poor beggar who found fortune. These are close to John 9:25, John 3:3, and Ephesians 2:8.

The repeated refrain and chorus make it a sing-along testimony. Its message is gratitude for rescue, new birth, and grace in Jesus.
