Lyrics

The night was so dark, I felt in my heart
My song had come to an end
My spirit was willing but my body was weak

I thought this is the way it would end
But Jesus came in like a thief in the night
Touched me and I was made whole
My song did not end; it started over again
And I wanted everybody to know
The story 'bout my
Healing, oh, healing
The Great Physician ministered healing to my soul
The ills of my body were healed by the strips of His back
The Great Physician ministered healing to my soul
My body was weak, my spirit was low
It seemed I died a little each day
My friends tried to help, they tried to cheer me on
But there was nothing for them to say
Then Jesus came in like a thief in the night
He touched me and I was made whole
The doctors were stunned, they had nothing to say
But there was something they had to know
I just told them 'bout my
If you're in the valley of the shadow of death
You think that your time is at hand
Don't think for a moment He's forgotten your name
At the crossing of Jordan, true healing begins
(Tag)
The ills of my body were healed by the stripes of His back
The Great Physician ministered healing to my soul
The Great Physician ministered healing to my soul

Meaning & Inspiration

“Healing” tells a testimony of weakness answered by the restoring presence of Jesus. The opening describes darkness, physical frailty, and the fear that the singer’s song has ended. Christ’s arrival reverses that despair: the song begins again, and personal recovery becomes public praise. Calling Jesus the Great Physician joins bodily healing with care for the soul, while the reference to his stripes echoes Isaiah’s image of suffering that brings healing.

The later verses repeat the movement from helplessness to hope. Friends and doctors cannot provide an explanation, but the singer attributes wholeness to Christ and feels compelled to tell the story. The final address to those in the valley of the shadow of death does not deny mortality. Instead, it insists that God remembers each name and points beyond present suffering toward final healing at the crossing of Jordan. The song therefore holds physical restoration, spiritual renewal, and resurrection hope together without treating any of them as merely private experiences.
