About The Cathedrals
The Cathedrals were a Southern gospel quartet that originated in 1963 as The Cathedral Trio, the house gospel group for Rex Humbard’s Cathedral of Tomorrow in Akron, Ohio. The trio consisted of Glen Payne, Bobby Clark, and Danny Koker. In 1964, the group expanded to a quartet with the addition of bass singer George Younce. Glen Payne and George Younce remained with the group for the duration of its existence, forming the core of its long-running sound.
In 1969, The Cathedrals transitioned from their church-based ministry into a full-time, independent touring group. Over the following decades, they became a prominent fixture in Southern gospel, recording a number of songs that became staples of the genre. Their catalog includes songs such as “Step Into the Water,” “Can He, Could He, Would He,” “I’ve Just Started Living,” “Champion of Love,” “Boundless Love,” and “Wedding Music.” In 1988, they recorded the album Symphony of Praise with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The group’s work earned significant recognition. They won Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Performance in 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1982. In 1977, they also received Dove Awards for Male Group of the Year and Best Southern Gospel Album. The Cathedrals retired in December 1999. Following their retirement, former members went on to form other Southern gospel groups, including Legacy Five and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound.
