Stars Go Dim - You Are Loved Lyrics
Released: 30 Sep 2015
Lyrics
We hide pain in the weirdest places
Broken souls with smiling faces
Fighting for surrender
For now and the after, yeah
Just look around and you'll see that people
Are scared to say how they really feel, oh
We all need a little honesty
You are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
When it feels like somethings missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
We're not made to be superheroes
Photoshopped, all size zeroes
A light not expected
But not quite perfected yet
Look up; see the sun is shining
There's hope on a new horizon
Calling you, it's calling
You are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
When it feels like somethings missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved.
You, don't have to prove yourself
Don't try to be someone else
You don't have to prove yourself
Don't try to be someone else
You are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
just look up; know you are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
When it feels like somethings missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved
When it feels like somethings missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; know you are loved.

Meaning & Inspiration
I spent years trying to be the guy who had it all together. I practiced my lines in the mirror, kept the shirt tucked in, and buried the parts of myself that felt like rot. Stars Go Dim says it right: "We hide pain in the weirdest places / Broken souls with smiling faces." I know that look. I’ve worn it while my insides were disintegrating. It’s a defense mechanism, really—if I smile wide enough, maybe no one will notice the charcoal stains on my conscience.
But here is the thing that hits me hard when I listen to this: "Fighting for surrender." That’s the most honest line in the whole record. You’d think giving up would be easy, but it’s the hardest fight I’ve ever been in. It’s a war against my own pride. I want to earn my way back home, work the fields as a hired hand, pay off the debt of every stupid mistake I made in the pigpen. I want to prove I’m worth the trouble, but the cross doesn't work like that. It’s an affront to my ego.
Scripture talks about the thief on the cross—a guy who had absolutely nothing to offer, no time left to "fix" his life, no resumes to submit. He just looked at Jesus and asked to be remembered. That’s the "look up" this song talks about. It isn’t some abstract, celestial gaze; it’s the desperate, neck-craning reach of someone who realizes they are completely underwater and can’t swim.
When I hear "You don't have to prove yourself," it makes me twitch. I spent so long trying to be "photoshopped"—the perfect kid, the golden boy—while actually feeling like a wreck. Being told I don't have to prove anything is terrifying. If I don't have to prove myself, then the weight of my worth doesn't rest on my shoulders, and that means I have to actually trust someone else to carry it. I’m still learning what that means. I’m still scraping the mud off my boots, half-expecting to be told to leave, but the door just keeps staying open.
There’s a tension in my chest when the track hits the chorus. "If your heart's in a thousand pieces." My heart is usually a mess of sharp edges and stuff I’d rather not look at. Maybe it’s not meant to be put back together by me. Maybe being found means letting the One who holds the pieces do the work while I just stop hiding.
I’m not a superhero. I’m just a guy who smelled like ash and stale choices when he finally stumbled home. The fact that the Father didn't ask for a shower before He hugged me? That’s still the scandal. I’m not sure I’ll ever fully wrap my head around it, and maybe that’s the point. You don't have to be perfect to be found; you just have to be willing to stop pretending you aren't lost.
