JJ Heller - Hand To Hold Lyrics
Lyrics
Trees are made for climbing, days are made for sun
Puddles are for jumping, fields are made to run
Stars are made for counting, and for wishes coming true
Sleep is made for dreaming, and I have dreams for you
May you never lose the wonder in your soul
May you always have a blanket for the cold
May the living light inside you be the compass as you go
May you always know you have my hand to hold
Stones are made for skipping, stories made to tell
Life is made for living, I pray you live it well
Learning comes from trying, so don't be afraid to lose
Songs are made for singing, I'll sing this one for you
May you never lose the wonder in your soul
May you always have a blanket for the cold
May the living light inside you be the compass as you go
May you always know you have my hand to hold
May the good Lord bless and keep you, fill you with His peace
His face will shine upon you, even as you sleep
Every day you're changing, sometimes I wish it wasn't true
Hearts are made for giving, I've given mine to you
May you never lose the wonder in your soul
May you always have a blanket for the cold
May the living light inside you be the compass as you go
May you always know you have my hand to hold
May you always know you have my hand to hold

Meaning & Inspiration
I’ve been listening to this on repeat, and it’s one of those tracks that settles in your chest. It feels like a parent talking to their kid, which is sweet enough on its own, but then she starts talking about the "living light inside" acting as a compass. That part makes me stop. It feels kind of like how the Psalms talk about God’s word being a lamp to our feet, but she puts the light inside the person. I’m not sure if that’s meant to be the Holy Spirit or just some internal goodness. If it’s just us, that doesn't quite sit right, considering Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful above all things. But then she pivots right into the Aaronic blessing from Numbers—"may the good Lord bless and keep you, fill you with His peace." That’s scripture, plain and simple. It’s that promise of God’s face shining on us.
It’s interesting how she mixes the human promise—I’ll be here to hold your hand—with the divine promise of God keeping us. It’s like she’s trying to be a shadow of what God actually does. We’re supposed to be mirrors of His love, right? Giving our hearts to others because He gave His first. I find myself wondering if I’m leaning too much on people’s hands when the promise is really that He never lets go of mine. Is the song just a gentle lullaby, or is it trying to say we have enough light within us to find our own way? I’m still chewing on that, honestly. The comfort is there, but I keep circling back to whether a hand to hold is ever really enough if it isn’t anchored to His.
