Victoria Loren “Tori” Kelly was born on December 14, 1992, in Wildomar, California. She first gained attention as a teenager by posting acoustic covers on YouTube, and in 2010 she competed on the ninth season of American Idol, advancing to Hollywood week. In 2012 she independently released her debut EP, Handmade Songs, which led to a deal with Capitol Records and the follow-up EP Foreword in 2013.
Her debut studio album, Unbreakable Smile, arrived in 2015 and peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200. That year she also released the single “Nobody Love.” In 2016 she voiced the character Meena in the animated film Sing, reprising the role for its 2021 sequel Sing 2. In 2018 she married professional basketball player André Murillo.
Despite her success in pop music, Kelly has also recorded gospel material. Her 2018 album Hiding Place and the song “Never Alone” each won a Grammy Award—Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song, respectively. She released the album Inspired by True Events in 2019. After signing with Epic Records, she put out the album Tori in 2024, and in 2025 she won a third Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Throughout her career, Kelly has drawn on her personal Christian faith while maintaining a presence in both pop and gospel music.
