The War Within

The War Within is an indie worship project led by songwriter John Harter. The project’s name is drawn from Romans 7, reflecting the internal struggle to serve God rather than oneself. Harter has spoken openly about his personal journey with faith, depression, and bipolar disorder, and he created The War Within to provide music for believers who face mental illness, addiction, and emotional or spiritual challenges.

The project’s sound blends Christian rock, gospel-infused indie rock, and alternative styles. The War Within releases both original songs and covers of popular worship music. Among its original tracks are “Out of My Grave,” “Crisis of Faith,” “Endgame,” “God Is With Us,” and “Where were You? (undone).” The project has also recorded a cover of the worship song “Resurrecting.”

The mission of The War Within is to impart principles of Christian faith while maintaining an intimate and uplifting atmosphere.
