About The Nelons
The Nelons are a multi-generational Southern Gospel ensemble that began in 1977 when Rex Nelon, formerly a member of the LeFevres, founded the group as The Rex Nelon Singers in Atlanta, Georgia. The family-based group changed its name to The Nelons in 1985, and over time, Rex’s daughter, Kelly Nelon Clark, stepped into the leadership role. Their musical style spans gospel, a cappella, hymns, Americana, and folk.
The group released several albums over the decades, including In One Accord (1985), Glad You’re Here (1997), and Hymns: The A Cappella Sessions (2014). Among their well-known songs are “Come Morning,” “We Shall Wear a Robe and Crown,” “O For a Thousand Tongues,” and “Excuse Me, Are You Jesus?” Their 2021 song “If God Pulled Back The Curtain” also became a notable entry in their catalog.
The Nelons received significant industry recognition. In 1987, they won a GMA Dove Award for Short Form Music Video of the Year for “Famine In The Land.” The video for “Excuse Me, Are You Jesus?” earned a People’s Choice Silver Telly Award in 2013. In 2016, the group was inducted into the Gospel Music Association (GMA) Hall of Fame. In 2021, they won another GMA Dove Award, this time for Country/Bluegrass/Roots Recorded Song of the Year for “If God Pulled Back The Curtain.”
In July 2024, the group experienced tragedy when a plane crash claimed the lives of members Kelly Nelon Clark, Jason Clark, and Amber Nelon Kistler. Their legacy as a family-driven Southern Gospel group remains part of the fabric of Christian music history.
