About The Cross Movement

The Cross Movement was a Christian hip-hop collective from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, focused on spreading the gospel through rap music. The group’s members included The Ambassador (William Branch), The Tonic (John Wells), Phanatik (Brady Goodwin), T.R.U.-L.I.F.E (Virgil Byrd), Cruz Cordero, Enock (Juan James), and Earthquake (Cleve Foat). They frequently collaborated with Christian disc jockey DJ Official.

The group also operated a record label, Cross Movement Records, and was associated with a non-profit organization called Cross Movement Ministries, which aimed to share the Christian gospel within hip-hop culture. Their lyrical approach centered on translating biblical and Christian theology into rap music.

The Cross Movement released seven albums between 1997 and 2007: Heaven’s Mentality (1997), House of Representatives (1999), Human Emergency (2000), Holy Culture (2003), Higher Definition (2004), Gift Rap (2004), Chronicles (Greatest Hits, Vol. 1) (2006), and HIStory: Our Place in His Story (2007). The group stopped recording together in 2007.

Their final album, HIStory: Our Place in His Story, earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album in 2008 and a Stellar Award nomination for Rap/Hip-Hop/Gospel CD of the Year that same year.
