Soweto Gospel Choir

The Soweto Gospel Choir is a South African gospel ensemble formed in 2002 in Soweto. The group was founded by David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, along with producers Andrew Kay, David Vigo, and Cliff Hocking. Drawing its membership from various churches throughout the Soweto region, the choir grew to include more than thirty vocalists. Their music blends traditional African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae, and American popular music, and they perform in English as well as several South African languages.

The choir has released a series of albums beginning with Voices from Heaven in 2005, followed by Blessed (2006), African Spirit (2007), Grace (2010), Freedom (2018), Hope (2022), and History of House in 2024. Their work has earned the group three Grammy Awards for Best Traditional World Music Album—for Blessed in 2007, African Spirit in 2008, and Freedom in 2019. In 2011, they also received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition/Direction/Lyrics.

Beyond the stage, the Soweto Gospel Choir has engaged in humanitarian efforts. They established the Nkosi’s Haven Vukani foundation to support children affected by AIDS, and they have served as ambassadors for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 campaign. Through their music and ministry, the choir continues to share the sound of South African gospel with audiences around the world.
