About Philip Bailey
Philip James Bailey was born on May 8, 1951, in Denver, Colorado, and is a singer, songwriter, and percussionist best known as a lead vocalist for the band Earth, Wind & Fire. He is also a noted gospel artist, having released several albums that reflect his Christian faith. Bailey attended East High School in Denver and later studied at the Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado. He is recognized for his four-octave vocal range and distinctive falsetto.
Bailey released his first gospel album, The Wonders of His Love, in 1984. His gospel album Triumph (1986) won a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Male in 1987. His solo catalog also includes the albums Family Affair (1989) and Love Will Find a Way (2019), as well as the pop-oriented Chinese Wall (1984), which produced the hit single “Easy Lover.”
Beyond his solo work, Bailey has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2008, he received an honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. His contributions to both mainstream and Christian music have been marked by technical skill and a career that spans multiple genres, including R&B, jazz, and gospel.
