NEEDTOBREATHE is an American rock band formed in 2001 in Seneca, South Carolina. The group was founded by brothers Bear Rinehart and Bo Rinehart, along with Seth Bolt and Joe Stillwell. The current lineup includes Bear Rinehart, Josh Lovelace, Randall Harris, and Tyler Burkum. The band’s name was inspired by a story about Socrates regarding the passion for one’s calling. The Rinehart brothers are the sons of a pastor and were raised in a household that primarily listened to Christian music.
While often categorized as a Christian rock band, NEEDTOBREATHE has frequently expressed a desire to avoid limiting labels in order to reach a broader audience. The group has achieved crossover success, charting on both Christian and mainstream rock formats. Their studio albums include Daylight (2006), The Outsiders (2009), and Caves (2023), among others.
The band is known for songs such as “Washed by the Water” (2007), “Multiplied” (2014), “Brother” (2015), and “Who Am I” (2020). Six of their albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. “Washed by the Water” reached No. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart, and “Brother” is a platinum-certified single. NEEDTOBREATHE has won multiple GMA Dove Awards, including Group of the Year. “Multiplied” also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.
