About Mortification

Mortification was formed in 1990 in Melbourne, Australia, by bassist and vocalist Steve Rowe. The band grew out of an earlier heavy metal group called Lightforce, which had been active since 1987. Steve Rowe served as Mortification’s primary songwriter, frontman, and consistent driving force throughout its history.

The band’s name is derived from the King James Bible verse “Mortify therefore the deeds of the flesh.” Mortification is recognized for blending elements of death metal, thrash metal, groove metal, and power metal, carving out a place in the Christian metal scene. Rowe has described the band’s work as a ministry.

Mortification released a series of albums in the 1990s and early 2000s, including their self-titled debut Mortification (1991), Scrolls of the Megilloth (1992), Post Momentary Affliction (1993), Blood World (1994), Primitive Rhythm Machine (1995), EnVision EvAngelene (1996), Hammer of God (1999), and The Silver Cord Is Severed (2001). The band signed with labels including Intense Records and Nuclear Blast.

Over the course of their career, Mortification released more than twenty albums. Through their aggressive musical style and explicit Christian message, the band became a notable presence in the international extreme metal scene while maintaining a focus on ministry.
