About Michael English
Michael English was born on April 12, 1962, in Kenansville, North Carolina, and began his musical career at a young age performing with his family’s group, The Singing Samaritans. He went on to become a member of several gospel groups, including The Singing Americans, The Happy Goodmans, and The Gospel Couriers. In 1985, he first joined the Gaither Vocal Band as lead singer, a role he would later return to in 2009.
English launched a solo career in 1991 with his self-titled debut album on Warner Alliance. He followed with the album Hope in 1993, which included the song “Holding Out Hope To You.” In 1994, he received four Gospel Music Association Dove Awards: Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year (his third consecutive win, following awards in 1992 and 1993), Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year for Hope, and Inspirational Song of the Year for “Holding Out Hope To You.” He also recorded the well-known songs “I Bowed On My Knees (And Cried Holy)” and “Mary, Did You Know?” Later solo albums included Freedom (1996) and Gospel (1998).
Following personal challenges, English returned to the music industry and published his autobiography, The Prodigal Comes Home, in 2007. The following year he released an album of the same name. In 2011, he was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
