Marvin Winans

Marvin Lawrence Winans Sr. was born on March 5, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, and has built a career as a gospel singer, songwriter, organist, pianist, and producer. He is a member of the renowned Winans family and was a founding member of the gospel group The Winans, with whom he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

In 1985, Winans won the Grammy Award for Best Male Soul Gospel Performance for his song “Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay.” His solo discography includes the album Introducing Perfected Praise (1992), followed by Alone, But Not Alone (2007) and Marvin L. Winans presents the Praise + Worship Experience (2012). In 2025, he released the single “Forgiveness.”

Beyond his music career, Winans founded the Perfecting Church in Detroit in 1989 and serves as its pastor. He also established the Marvin L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts (WAPA) in 1997. Winans has appeared as an actor on the television show Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and delivered the eulogy at Whitney Houston’s funeral in 2012.
