Lionel Petersen

Lionel Petersen (1947–2022) was a South African singer, preacher, and worship leader. Born in the Alexandra Township of Johannesburg, he began his music career as a member of groups including The Thunderballs, The Miracles, The Invaders, and Harari. In 1974, he became the first Black artist to win a SARIE Award, South Africa’s equivalent to the Grammy Awards, for his song “Come Back Liza.” During the 1970s, he recorded several pop hits such as “I Need a Little Love” and “Private Number,” establishing himself on the national music scene.

In 1987, Petersen became a born-again Christian and joined the Rhema Bible Church in Johannesburg. This spiritual turning point led him to shift his career from pop and soul to gospel music. He served as a worship leader at the church and recorded the live album Rejoice Africa in 1993.

Within the South African gospel community, Petersen was recognized as a mentor and father figure, offering guidance to younger artists. His catalog also included songs like “Bouncy Bouncy Bounce,” “That’s the Way,” and “I’ll Keep On Coming Back,” reflecting his journey from mainstream success to a focused ministry in worship music. Lionel Petersen passed away in 2022, leaving a legacy that bridged South Africa’s pop and gospel worlds.
