About Joy Williams
Joy Williams began her career as a Contemporary Christian Music artist after signing with Reunion Records at age seventeen. Born Joy Elizabeth Williams on November 14, 1982, in West Branch, Michigan, she was raised in a Christian home in Mount Hermon, California. She attended Valley Christian High School in San Jose, graduating as class valedictorian in 2001.
Between 2001 and 2005, Williams released three albums as a solo Christian artist: Joy Williams (2001), By Surprise (2002), and Genesis (2005). Her catalog from this period also includes the songs “Hide” and “Every Moment.” During these years she received eleven Dove Award nominations.
In 2009, Williams co-founded the artist development firm Sensibility Music. That same year, she became a member of the folk-rock duo The Civil Wars. She remained with the duo until its dissolution in 2014. As part of The Civil Wars, Williams won four Grammy Awards. The duo’s 2011 album Barton Hollow became a significant success.
Following her time with The Civil Wars, Williams returned to solo work. She released the album Venus in 2015, marking a transition to a secular singer-songwriter career. Her 2019 solo album Front Porch earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Folk Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards.
