About Jennifer Knapp
Jennifer Knapp was born on April 12, 1974, in Chanute, Kansas, and attended Pittsburg State University on a music scholarship before beginning her professional career in the contemporary Christian music industry in the 1990s. Her debut studio album, Kansas (1998), earned RIAA Gold certification, and the single "Undo Me" helped her win the 1999 Dove Awards for New Artist of the Year and Rock Song of the Year. She followed with the albums Lay It Down (2000) and The Way I Am (2001), both of which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Gospel Album.
In 2002, Knapp stepped away from the music industry during a personal hiatus lasting several years. She returned in 2009 and released Letting Go in 2010, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard 200 chart. During this period, she also pursued theological studies, earning a master’s degree in theological studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School.
Knapp continued to release music, including Set Me Free (2014) and Love Comes Back Around (2017). In 2012, she founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within faith communities. She published her memoir, Facing the Music, in 2014, sharing her personal journey and her perspective on faith and identity. Her career has encompassed songwriting, recording, and public advocacy, reflecting a path that moved from contemporary Christian music success to broader engagement with faith, theology, and social issues.
