Hlengiwe Mhlaba

Hlengiwe Mhlaba is a South African gospel singer and songwriter whose career in Christian music was built on a foundation of faith and perseverance. Born on July 7, 1973, in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, she committed her life to Christ at a young age and began singing in her church choir. Before pursuing music full-time, she trained as a teacher.

Her professional music career began after she was discovered by gospel singer and promoter Sipho Makhabane. She released her debut album, Dwala Lami, in 2005, marking the start of a steady recording ministry. Over the years, she has released a series of albums including Hlala Kuye (2009), Laphalala Igazi (2011), Abba Baba (2012), Esandleni Somusa (2013), Blessings (2016), Sthandwa Sami (2017), and Jesu Uyalalela (2024).

Mhlaba’s work has been recognized with several honors, including a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Contemporary Gospel and a Crown Gospel Music Award for Best Traditional Gospel. In 2020, she received an honorary Doctorate in Theology from Immanuel University of Theology International, reflecting her commitment to ministry beyond music. She has also spoken openly about her upbringing and the importance of mental health awareness, adding a personal dimension to her public witness.
