Hawk Nelson was a Canadian Christian rock and pop-punk band formed in Peterborough, Ontario, in 2000. Bassist Daniel Biro was the only founding member to remain with the band throughout its entire history. The group was discovered by Trevor McNevan of the band Thousand Foot Krutch and went on to release eight studio albums between 2004 and 2018.
The band’s early years featured lead singer Jason Dunn, who fronted the group on albums such as Letters to the President (2004), Smile, It’s the End of the World (2006), Hawk Nelson Is My Friend (2008), Live Life Loud (2009), and Crazy Love (2011). Hawk Nelson Is My Friend earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Recording Package in 2009. In 2010, the band won two Canadian GMA Covenant Awards. After Dunn’s departure in 2012, Jonathan Steingard stepped in as lead vocalist. Under Steingard, the band released Made (2013), Diamonds (2015), and Miracles (2018). The single “Words” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Hot AC/CHR chart and earned a SESAC award.
In May 2020, Steingard publicly announced that he no longer believed in God. The remaining band members released a statement affirming their mission and expressing support for their former frontman. Though no formal disbandment announcement was made, the band has not been active since 2020.
