David Norris Phelps was born on October 21, 1969, in Tomball, Texas, and is recognized as a Christian music vocalist and songwriter. He graduated from Baylor University in 1992 with a degree in music and vocal performance, grounding his career in formal training as a tenor. Phelps is known for his tenure with the Gaither Vocal Band and for a solo career spanning gospel, inspirational, and Christmas music. His vocal range is noted to exceed three octaves.
Phelps first served as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1997 to 2005 and returned to the group from 2009 to 2017. During his time with the ensemble, he won twelve Dove Awards and received four Grammy Award nominations. He has also performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
As a solo artist, Phelps has released numerous albums, beginning with Journey to Grace (1994). His catalog includes Joy, Joy (2000), Revelation (2004), No More Night: David Phelps Live in Birmingham (2007), Classic (2012), Freedom (2015), Hymnal (2017), and Speak of Love (2024). His live concert DVD Classic debuted at number one on the Billboard Music Video chart, as did his 2015 release Freedom and its companion DVD. His live album Legacy of Love: David Phelps Live! (2006) received RIAA Gold certification.
Phelps is married to Lori Purtle Phelps, and the couple has four children.
