About Buddy Greene
Buddy Greene is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player whose work spans gospel, country, bluegrass, folk, and blues. Born on October 30, 1953, and raised in Macon, Georgia, he graduated from Mercer University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Greene began his professional career in the early 1980s as a member of Jerry Reed’s band, then released his debut solo album, Praise You, Lord, in 1986.
Greene is widely known for co-writing the Christmas song “Mary, Did You Know?” with Mark Lowry. His solo catalog includes Praise Harmonica (1987), Sojourner’s Song (1990), Grace for the Moment (1994), Minstrel of the Lord (1995), RUFUS (2002), Hymns and Prayer Songs (2004), and Looking Back (2017). In 1991, Sojourner’s Song earned him a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for Best Country Album, and he received nine additional Dove Award nominations throughout his career.
A frequent performer on the Gaither Homecoming video series, Greene also displayed his instrumental skill with a harmonica rendition of the “William Tell Overture” performed at Carnegie Hall. He announced his retirement from full-time touring around 2020, leaving behind a body of work that bridges Southern gospel traditions with Americana and bluegrass influences.
