Betty Bayo

Betty Bayo (born Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua) was a Kenyan gospel singer who rose to prominence in the early 2010s as part of the contemporary Kikuyu gospel music scene. She was born on June 4, 1985, in Banana, Kiambu County, Kenya, and was the youngest of eight siblings.

Her path to music was marked by early hardship. Financial difficulties forced her to drop out of school in Form Two, and she worked as a househelp for approximately two years before returning to complete her secondary education. That resilience would later define both her character and her artistry.

Bayo’s music was known for a distinctive, conversational narrative style that blended worship themes with everyday struggles such as family, heartbreak, and faith. Her catalog included songs such as “11th Hour,” “Jemedari,” “Siyabonga,” “Busy Busy,” “Thiiri,” “Maneno,” and “Gatho.” In 2022, she released the album “Uira.”

After a battle with leukemia, Betty Bayo passed away on November 10, 2025. Her work remains a touchstone in the contemporary Kikuyu gospel wave she helped shape.
