About Avion Blackman
Avion Blackman is a vocalist and bassist known for her work in Christian reggae, both as a member of the band Christafari and through her solo gospel recordings. She was born Avion Claudette Trudy Henrietta Blackman on January 30, 1976, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, to Ras Shorty I, a musician credited with inventing soca and jamoo music. She began performing on stage at age four and started playing bass for her family’s band, The Love Circle, at age 14.
In 2003, Blackman relocated to Los Angeles, California, and married Christafari founder Mark Mohr. That same year, she joined Christafari as a bassist and vocalist. She has contributed to numerous Christafari albums, including Gravity (2004) and Anthems (2020).
Blackman launched her solo career with the debut album Onyinye in 2005, which won three Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards, including Album of the Year. She followed with albums Sweet Life (2008), Third World Girl (2011), Greatest Hits (2013), and Fly (2020). Her music blends reggae, worship, and world music influences. Among her songs are “Yeshua” and the Christafari collaborations “Hiding Place” and “My Sustenance.”
