About Al Green
Al Green is an ordained pastor, gospel recording artist, and celebrated soul singer. He was born Albert Leornes Greene on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, and began his musical career performing gospel music with his siblings in a group called the Greene Brothers. In the late 1960s, he transitioned to secular soul music, achieving major success with the 1972 hit “Let’s Stay Together.”
Following a personal crisis in 1974, Green experienced a spiritual awakening that led him to commit fully to his faith. He became an ordained pastor in 1976 and founded the Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis, Tennessee, where he continues to serve. During the 1980s, he focused his recording career primarily on gospel music, releasing albums such as “The Lord Will Make a Way” (1980), “Higher Plane” (1981), “Precious Lord” (1982), “Trust in God” (1984), “He Is the Light” (1985), “Soul Survivor” (1987), and “I Get Joy” (1989).
Green’s contributions to music have earned him widespread recognition. He has received 11 Grammy Awards, including honors for his gospel recordings, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
