UpperRoom Music - Love Note Lyrics

Lyrics

I sent my only son to be with whom I love

You are all I want the wonder of it all

From heaven’s gates you catch my gaze

And I love you in the morning, in the noon time, in the evening

You're my one thing

You're my dearest

Here's my love note, can you hear it

A dinner for two just me and you let's take some time to sit down and dine

I broke my bread and poured out my wine I did what it took to make you my bride

I'm bringing you back to the garden, back where it all started

All of your sins have been pardoned

Now we just get to be together, now we just get to be together

Now we just get to be together, now we just get to be together

And I love you in the morning, in the noon time, in the evening

You're my one thing

You're my dearest

Here's my love note, can you hear it

And I love you in the morning, in the noon time, in the evening

You're my one thing

You're my dearest

Here's my love note, can you hear it

Can you hear it, do you hear it

Writing words over you, singing songs over you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm all around you, I'm all around you

Baby I’m all around you, I'm all around you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you

I'm all around you, I'm all around you

I'm all around you, I'm all around you

And I love you in the morning, in the noon time, in the evening

You're my one thing

You're my dearest

Here's my love note, can you hear it

And I love you in the morning, in the noon time, in the evening

You're my one thing

You're my dearest

Here's my love note, can you hear it

Meaning & Inspiration

UpperRoom’s “Love Note” presents a unique challenge when you’re standing at the front with a microphone. It’s an intimate, whispered conversation that assumes the voice of God—a bold choice that invites scrutiny. When we sing, we are usually answering God, but here, the congregation is invited to inhabit the perspective of the Father speaking to His children.

The weight of this song hinges on a specific line: “I broke my bread and poured out my wine / I did what it took to make you my bride.”

As someone responsible for what the room sings, I often wince at songs that try to do too much. But this line pulls us straight to the Last Supper and the subsequent reality of the Cross. It isn’t flowery; it’s visceral. It grounds the "love note" in the high cost of communion. It reminds the room that reconciliation wasn't just a divine thought—it was a physical sacrifice. If you’re a congregant, you aren't just being serenaded; you are being reminded of the ransom paid.

However, the song moves into a repetitive, almost dizzying section: “I’m above you, I’m beneath you, I’m before you, I’m behind you.”

Lyrically, this is a clear echo of Psalm 139:5, where David marvels at the inescapable presence of God. But there is a tension here. In a communal setting, the repetition can go one of two ways. It can become a meditative soak where the truth of God’s omnipresence finally sinks past the intellect and into the gut. Or, it can become a loop that loses its anchor. Does the congregation know why they are being surrounded? Are they hearing the whisper of a God who hems them in for protection, or is it just a rhythmic chant?

The “Landing” of this song is elusive. It doesn’t end with a robust, congregational shout of victory. Instead, it fades out on a question: “Here’s my love note, can you hear it?”

That’s a vulnerable place to leave a room full of people. Most of our liturgy is designed to give people a firm place to stand—a declaration of who God is. “Love Note” leaves us hanging in the quiet, forcing each person to sit with the silence and honestly answer whether they are actually listening to the voice of the Father.

It makes me wonder if we’ve become too comfortable with songs that provide all the answers. Maybe there’s a place for a song that stops abruptly, leaving the melody lingering in the air, asking us if we’ve truly perceived the gravity of the bread and the wine. It’s not a song for a rally; it’s a song for a moment of quiet, terrifying intimacy. You can’t fake your way through this one. You’re either standing in the garden, or you’re just listening to the music.
