Meaning & Inspiration

It’s funny, because hearing this, I keep going back to Isaiah 43 where God talks about making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. That part of the song, calling Him a way maker, feels so grounded in how He actually revealed Himself to Israel. He’s always been the one clearing paths when there didn't seem to be any way out. It’s comforting, really. But then I get stuck on the repetitive parts about Him working even when I can't feel it. I try to square that with how Scripture talks about faith. It’s one thing to say God is working, but it’s another to wonder if I’m just projecting my own desire for a specific kind of "miracle" onto Him. Is He always mending hearts in the way I want Him to?

There’s this tension in calling Him a miracle worker. I know the Gospels are full of Him doing things no one else could, but the disciples still had to face the cross, and sometimes it feels like the song ignores the reality that suffering doesn’t always end with a miracle we can see or understand right away. I don't want to dismiss the comfort of knowing He's present, since the promise of His presence is everywhere from Genesis to the end of Revelation. Still, I find myself questioning if I focus more on what I need Him to do—the mending, the turning things around—rather than just who He is regardless of whether the circumstances change. It’s easy to sing about Him being the light in the darkness, but does that hold up when everything stays dark for a long time? I’m not sure I have a clean answer for that, just that I keep singing it anyway, hoping that the promise-keeper part is true even when my own eyes tell me nothing is moving at all.
