Lyrics

When I gaze into the night sky
And see the works of Your fingers
The moon and stars
Suspended in space
But what is man
That You are mindful of him?

You have given man
A crown of glory and honor
And have made him
A little lower than the angels
You have put him
In charge of all creation
The beasts of the field
The birds of the air
The fish of the sea
Oh, what is man
Oh, what is man
That You are mindful of him?

O Lord, our God
The majesty and glory
Of Your name
Transcends the earth
And fills the heavens

O Lord, our God
Little children praise Him perfectly
And so would we
And so would we

Alleluia, Alleluia
The majesty and glory of Your name
Alleluia, Alleluia
The majesty and glory of Your name
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Meaning & Inspiration

Sometimes I catch myself looking up at the sky and just feeling completely small, you know? Like, the scale of everything—the stars, that vast quiet—it just makes the air in my lungs feel a little heavier. Sandi Patty singing about the moon and stars being held by His fingers hits that same nerve. It’s funny, because the words pull right from that Psalm, asking why He’d even care about us. Why bother? It’s not like we’re the center of the physics, but here we are, supposedly crowned with glory. I don’t feel very glorious most days. I feel like a mess, honestly. But then she sings about being put in charge of the birds and the beasts, and it feels like a weight. A responsibility I didn't ask for but can't shake.

It’s strange how He looks at a human, this fragile thing, and decides it’s worth crowning. That bit about being made lower than the angels—it’s not a demotion, really. It’s a placement. And if the kids can just praise Him without all the clutter and the noise that I drag around in my head, maybe I’m overcomplicating the whole thing. I spend so much time analyzing why I believe or whether I’m doing it right, and meanwhile, the heavens are just shouting the majesty of His name without asking for permission.

The repetition of the Alleluias at the end, it gets loud. It’s not a polite whisper. It’s like the song is trying to break out of the scale of a human voice. I wonder if I actually believe that His glory fills the heavens, or if I just like the way it sounds when it’s sung back at me. It’s hard to sit with the idea that He is mindful of me, especially when the silence of the night feels more like indifference than presence. Yet, I keep listening to it. I keep waiting for the rest of the answer.
