Phil Wickham - Tethered Lyrics
Lyrics
I don't wanna miss the beauty
Of Heaven all around me
Your power and Your mercy
The greatness of Your love
I don't wanna lose the wonder
Of being in Your presence
Of knowing such a friendship
To be with You, my God
Everything I am
I throw into Your hands
I just want my life to ever be in [?] with You
Tethered to Your heart
I just want my soul to ever stand in awe of You
Tethered to Your heart
Ooh, tethered to Your heart
What more could I desire
What greater thing to treasure
I'm convinced there's nothing better
Than living in Your love
Caught up in the wonder
Of being in Your presence
Of knowing such a friendship
To be with You, my God
Everything I am
God I throw into Your hands
I just want my life to ever be in [?] with You
Tethered to Your heart
I just want my soul to ever stand in awe of You
Tethered to Your heart
Ooh, tethered to Your heart
Tethered to Your heart, yeah
Tethered to Your heart
Draw me closer
Take me deeper
I wanna be where You are
I wanna be where You are
Draw me closer
Take me deeper
I wanna be where You are
I wanna be where You are
Draw me closer
Take me deeper
I wanna be where You are
I wanna be where You are
I just want my life to ever be entwined with You
Tethered to Your heart
I just want my soul to ever stand in awe of You
Tethered to Your heart
Ooh, tethered to Your heart
Ooh, tethered to Your heart

Meaning & Inspiration
I’ve been thinking about this song, "Tethered," from that 2019 live recording. It feels like a simple prayer, wanting to stay connected to God, but it’s heavier than it sounds at first. The idea of being "tethered to Your heart" makes me think about that verse in John 15 where Jesus talks about the branches and the vine. It’s hard to imagine actually staying attached like that, especially when my life feels so chaotic and disconnected. I guess that’s why the lyrics admit to wanting to be drawn closer—it assumes we aren’t always there, or at least that we drift.
There’s a part where he sings about throwing everything he is into God’s hands. It’s a bold thing to say. It reminds me of the rich young ruler who couldn't quite let go of his stuff, or even Peter stepping out of the boat. It sounds great, but I wonder if I actually mean it when I’m not standing in a room full of people singing along. Is my life really tethered, or am I just using the language of surrender while still keeping a tight grip on things?
The song talks about "knowing such a friendship" with God. That’s a strange shift from the way the Bible often describes the relationship between the Creator and the creature. God called Abraham His friend, sure, and Jesus called the disciples friends, but there’s still that massive gap between holiness and our mess. I love the sentiment, but sometimes I feel like we get a bit too casual with the Almighty. Yet, looking at the Psalms, there’s such intense intimacy there, like David just pouring out his raw need. Maybe being tethered to His heart is just the only way to survive the weight of living. I keep coming back to that final plea to be "where You are," and I’m left wondering if I actually want to be there, right in the center of His refining fire, or if I just like the feeling of singing about it.
