Pat Barrett - Trust Lyrics

Lyrics

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And lean not on your understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him And He will make your path straight He will make your path straight

Whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my

Try that with me

Whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my days

Hey Yeah

I won’t be shaken I won’t be moved I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

No hesitation I know what I choose I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

I won’t be shaken I won’t be moved I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

No hesitation I know what I choose I have decided I’m gonna trust in You

Whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my days

Oh whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my
Hey

Cause I won’t be shaken I won’t be moved I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

No hesitation I know what I choose I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

I won’t be shaken I won’t be moved I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You

No hesitation I know what I choose I have decided I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You Gonna trust, gonna trust in You Gonna trust in You

One more time, all together

Whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my days

Oh Whatever may come
Whatever may go I will trust in Him

In every high In every low I will trust again

With all of my heart, with all of my soul And with all I am God I’m gonna trust You all my days God I’m gonna trust You all my days

Meaning & Inspiration

There’s a specific kind of vertigo that hits when you ask a congregation to sing, "I won’t be shaken / I won’t be moved." As someone who spends hours mapping out the flow of a service, I’m always checking the structural integrity of those claims. If we’re being honest, most of the people standing in row four are currently being shaken by something—a medical diagnosis, a fraying marriage, or just the quiet, grinding weight of Monday morning.

Pat Barrett leans hard on Proverbs 3:5-6 here. It’s the bedrock, simple and direct. But the tension in this track isn't found in the verses; it’s in the repetition of the promise to "trust again."

That word "again" is the most honest part of the entire composition. It’s an admission that trust isn't a singular, heroic act we perform once and then file away. It’s a rhythmic return. We trust, we lose our footing, and we have to trust again.

When we sing "I won’t be shaken" alongside "I will trust again," there is a strange, necessary friction. If I am truly, bulletproof-unshakeable, why do I need to make the decision to trust, again and again? The song feels like it’s wrestling with the difference between our internal state—which is often chaotic and fragile—and the reality of God’s path, which Barrett reminds us is "straight" even when our logic says we’re walking into a thicket.

From a liturgical standpoint, the song avoids the trap of making the singer the hero. It isn’t about how much faith I can muster up; it’s about acknowledging the object of that faith. However, the sheer volume of "I will" statements can occasionally feel like a pep talk we’re giving ourselves to drown out the doubt. It’s a bold declaration, certainly. But does it leave the room with enough room for the person who feels like they’re currently crumbling?

Maybe the landing isn’t the feeling of being "unmoved." Maybe the landing is the moment the music stops and the singer has to go back to their life, realizing they haven't actually solved their problems, but they have decided which direction to face. It’s a posture rather than a feeling.

There’s a vulnerability in that repeated refrain, "I’m gonna trust, gonna trust in You." It sounds like someone gripping the steering wheel of a car in the middle of a storm. They aren't saying the storm has stopped. They’re just saying they’ve decided not to let go of the wheel. It’s not a polished triumph. It’s a stubborn, quiet grit. That’s something I can actually work with on a Sunday morning. It’s not pretending that the ground beneath us is solid; it’s admitting that even when the ground gives way, our direction remains fixed on Him.
