Lyrics

There is a sweet anointing in this sanctuary
There is a stillness in the atmosphere
Come and lay down the burdens you have carried
For in this sanctuary God is here

There is a sweet anointing in this sanctuary
There is a stillness in the atmosphere
Come and lay down the burdens you have carried
For in this sanctuary God is here

There is a sweet anointing in this sanctuary
There is a stillness in the atmosphere
Come and lay down the burdens you have carried
For in this sanctuary God is here

He is Here, He is Here
To break the yoke and lift the heavy burden
He is Here, He is Here
To heal the hopeless heart and bless the broken
Come and lay down the burdens you have carried
For in this sanctuary God is here.

He is Here, He is Here
To break the yoke and lift the heavy burden
He is Here, He is Here
To heal the hopeless heart and bless the broken
Come and lay down the burdens you have carried
For in this sanctuary God is here.

Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord
Speak Lord Speak Lord

Meaning & Inspiration

I was listening to Martha Munizzi’s track from The Best Is Yet to Come, released back in 2003, and this idea that God is somehow more present in a sanctuary really grabbed me. It’s a nice thought, right? That we can just walk into a building and the atmosphere shifts. The Bible talks about how where two or three are gathered, He’s there in the midst, so that part feels right. It makes sense that we’d want to lay down our burdens when we feel that sense of His nearness. But then I start thinking about the flip side. If I’m at home doing dishes or stuck in traffic, is He not just as present? I know the song is inviting people into a space of worship, and the bit about breaking the yoke—that’s classic Isaiah 10—but I worry sometimes that we start believing we have to go to a specific place to find Him or to let Him heal the brokenhearted.

It hits home when she sings about healing the hopeless heart. That’s what He promised in the Psalms, that He’s close to those who are crushed in spirit. That feels very biblical. But the repetition of "in this sanctuary" keeps pulling me back. It’s like we’re trying to pin God down to a room. I want to believe He’s as active in my kitchen as He is on a Sunday morning, and maybe the song doesn't mean to exclude that, but the focus on the building makes me wonder if we’re putting our own boundaries on where He’s allowed to move. It’s a relief to think about laying down a heavy load, and heaven knows I need that, but I’m left wondering if I’m waiting for an atmosphere to change or if I’m just supposed to trust He’s there even when the room feels empty and quiet.
