Koryn Hawthorne - The Name Lyrics

Lyrics

All my heavy chains gettin' broken
Come exalt Your? (Yeah)

Made my bed and I dug my grave
You've done work with the folk, myself
I saw God 2-double-0-8
Been gettin' wilder, yeah, to this day
I got no shame in my face
I regret to not give thanks
HGA, man, whatever it take
On my name, that's my gain
All day, goin' psycho (Psycho)
On top of the kick, go iso (Iso)
Man, just tryna go disciple, uh
You just tryna go viral
You tryna build you up an empire, uh
Kick it more, you gon' revive us? No
Dust in the wind, let it blow away
Sun comes out, all the stars gotta go away

All my heavy chains gettin' broken (Hey)
And my weary heart's givin' hope
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name
All my prison doors swingin' open (Hey)
'Cause the enemy couldn't hold
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name

Yeah
"Remember my God," what I wrote in my will
Break my bones, never break my zeal
Take my home, you can take my deal
Filled with the Ghost, so I say what I feel
We don't talk, tryna make it to the top
Get there, find God holdin' that spot
I work hard and I'm good what I got
I'm a rapper when the doctor said that I wouldn't talk
Uh, cold as the wind chill
Thirteen, I was thrown through a windshield (Kee)
Every day that I'm still healed, uh
You could be Lord, I could be still, uh
Need You more if I'm payin' my bills
Need no preacher, come give me no chills
Give me Your face, Lord, give me Your will
Honesty is free and the soul get healed
In this mug tryna OD
My freedom's Your glory
When it's goin' left, Gin?bili
Still doin' what You told me
Puttin' all the pieces back together
You will not forget us, how You called me
Know You wrappin' up the story

All my heavy chains gettin' broken (Hey)
And my weary heart's givin' hope
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name
All my prison doors swingin' open (Hey)
'Cause the enemy couldn't hold
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name

All my heavy chains gettin' broken (Hey)
And my weary heart's givin' hope
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name
All my prison doors swingin' open (Hey)
'Cause the enemy couldn't hold
Come exalt Your Name
Exalt Your Name

Forever (Forever)
And ever (And ever)
Your glory (Your glory)
Of heaven
Come exalt Your Name
Your Name, Your Name
(Exalt Your Name) Your Name, Your Name
Forgive us (Forgive us)
Defend us (Defend us)
Come lift us (Come lift us)
We live to exalt Your Name
Your Name, Your Name
(Exalt Your Name) Your Name

Meaning & Inspiration

I’ve spent a long time sitting in the back pew, where the wood is worn smooth by knees that have pressed against it in both desperation and relief. My hands are map-lined now, and I’ve buried more friends than I care to count. When you reach this age, you don’t have much patience for music that’s just loud for the sake of being loud. You need something that holds up when the house is quiet and the night is long.

Watching Koryn Hawthorne and Natalie Grant move through "Speak the Name," I found myself caught on a specific phrase: “All my prison doors swingin’ open.”

It’s easy to sing about doors swinging open when you’re young and the world looks like an invitation. But after four decades, you know that some prisons aren't made of iron or stone. They’re made of the regrets you keep in your pockets and the fears that wake you at 3:00 a.m. When the prophet Isaiah spoke of setting the captive free (Isaiah 61:1), he wasn’t just talking about a change in scenery; he was talking about a change in the soul.

I wonder, though, does the door stay open when the adrenaline fades?

There’s a raw, frantic energy here that feels very much like a younger generation shouting into the dark. It’s a different kind of noise than the hymns I grew up with, but there’s a familiar ache beneath it. When they cry out, “Come exalt Your Name,” it isn’t a polite request. It sounds like someone gripping the hem of a garment, refusing to let go until they’re made whole.

I think of the times I’ve felt trapped—by bitterness, by health, by the simple, crushing weight of losing my footing. Scripture tells us in Proverbs 18:10 that the name of the Lord is a strong tower, and the righteous run into it and are safe. It doesn’t say the tower keeps the wind from blowing; it says it keeps us from being blown away.

I’m not entirely sure what to make of the fast-paced delivery—it rattles my old bones a bit. Yet, when the chorus kicks in, something shifts. It’s that old, reliable truth: when you’re out of strength, you stop trying to build your own empire and you simply speak the Name. That’s the only thing that actually survives the fire.

Maybe the "young man’s noise" isn't noise at all. Maybe it’s just a different way of doing the same work I’ve been doing for forty years—trying to convince myself that God is still standing in the ruins, holding the spot, exactly where He said He’d be. It’s enough to keep me sitting here for one more Sunday.
