The Soul Stirrers

The Soul Stirrers were a pioneering American gospel quartet whose sound helped shape modern gospel music. The group was founded in Trinity, Texas, around 1926 by Silas Roy Crain, and its name came from a listener’s comment that their singing "stirred his soul." Rebert H. (R.H.) Harris served as an early musical leader and innovator, guiding the group as they developed a more rhythmic, modern gospel style. In 1936, the quartet recorded for the Library of Congress with music historian Alan Lomax, preserving early examples of their evolving sound.

Sam Cooke joined The Soul Stirrers as lead vocalist in 1950, bringing a smooth, expressive delivery that broadened the group’s appeal. That same year they released "By and By" and "In That Awful Hour." In 1951, their recording "Jesus Gave Me Water" reached number one on Billboard’s gospel charts and later was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (Class of 2026). The group also performed at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill during this era.

The Soul Stirrers continued to record notable songs through the 1950s and early 1960s, including "Nearer to Thee" (1955), "Touch the Hem of His Garment" (1956), "Stand By Me Father" (1959), and "Jesus Be a Fence Around Me" (1961). Their impact on both gospel and soul music was recognized when the pre-Cooke lineup of the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
