The Sensational Nightingales

The Sensational Nightingales are a long-standing traditional black gospel quartet whose harmonies and dignified stage presence have made them a fixture in gospel music. The group was founded in 1942 in Philadelphia by Barney Parks, originally operating under the name The Nightingales before adopting their permanent name. Early on, they became known by the affectionate nickname "The Gentlemen of Song," a nod to their polished quartet harmonies.

Julius "June" Cheeks joined the group in 1946 and became a prominent lead singer during their peak in the 1950s. The Sensational Nightingales signed with Peacock Records in 1952, and one of their earliest recordings, "Will You Welcome Me There," was released in 1947. Other early songs in their catalog include "Somewhere to Lay My Head" and "See How They Done My Lord." In 1960, Charles Johnson stepped in as lead singer, a role he would hold until 1984.

The group moved to Malaco Records in 1979, beginning a fruitful partnership. During this period, they released albums including All About Jesus (1980) and I Surrender All (1984), which appeared on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart for two months. In 1984, Calvert McNair replaced Charles Johnson as lead singer, leading the group through further releases such as Freedom After a While (1987) and A Message From the Book (1991).

The Sensational Nightingales have also taken their music beyond American borders. In 1983, they served as Ambassadors of Goodwill for the U.S. Information Agency, touring internationally. Their legacy in quartet gospel was recognized when they became the first group inducted into the American Gospel Quartet Convention Hall of Fame, a testament to their enduring impact on the tradition.
