The Mighty Clouds of Joy

The Mighty Clouds of Joy are a prominent American gospel quartet known for blending traditional church music with soul and R&B influences. The group was formed in Los Angeles, California, in the late 1950s by original members Joe Ligon, Johnny Martin, Richard Wallace, Ermant Franklin Jr., and Elmo Franklin.

The Mighty Clouds of Joy were among the first gospel groups to incorporate an electrified rhythm section and stylized choreography into their performances. Their innovative approach helped them reach audiences beyond the church, and they became the first gospel act to appear on the television program Soul Train in 1974. Lead singer Joe Ligon was known for incorporating sermon-style declamations into their songs. The group performed at a range of notable venues over the years, including the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and the White House.

The group released several significant recordings across the decades. Their early works included "Steal Away to Jesus" (1960) and the album Family Circle (1961). They later found crossover success with the song "Mighty High" (1975), which reached number one on the Billboard Disco/Dance chart. The album Live and Direct (1977) won the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Traditional in 1979. The following year, their album Changing Times (1979) won the same award. Later releases include Pray for Me (1990), which won the Grammy for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 1992, and At the Revival (2010).

In recognition of their impact on the genre, the Mighty Clouds of Joy were inducted into the Gospel Music Association's Hall of Fame in 1999. The group maintained a long-standing career, releasing over 30 albums throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century.
