The Florida Boys

The Florida Boys were a male vocal quartet in the Southern gospel music genre. The group was founded in 1947 by J. G. Whitfield as the Gospel Melody Quartet and was renamed The Florida Boys in 1954. Long-time members included Les Beasley (lead/guitar), Glen Allred (baritone), and Derrell Stewart (piano).

The Florida Boys hosted a nationally syndicated television program titled The Gospel Singing Jubilee. They were the first Southern gospel group to sign with Canaan Records. Their recorded catalog includes the albums What a Difference Jesus Makes and The Florida Boys Sing Gospel Hits (Volume I), as well as songs such as "Standing on the Solid Rock," "Lead Me to the Altar," and "I Lean on You Lord."

The group’s recording of "When He Was on the Cross, I Was on His Mind" held the top position on the Singing News chart for five months in 1985. The Florida Boys were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999. The group officially retired in 2016.
