The Chuck Wagon Gang

The Chuck Wagon Gang is a long-standing country-gospel musical ensemble that began in 1935 in Lubbock, Texas. The group was founded by David P. “Dad” Carter and his children Ernest “Jim,” Lola “Rose,” and Effie “Anna.” They first performed as the Carter Quartet on radio station KFYO, then adopted the name Chuck Wagon Gang in 1936. Over the years, the ensemble maintained a 39-year recording partnership with Columbia Records and became known for its signature four-part harmonies backed by a lone guitar.

The group’s sound and family-based roots carried it from Depression-era radio into national venues. The Chuck Wagon Gang performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Grand Ole Opry. Their catalog includes albums such as That Old Time Religion (1964), Joy Bells Ringing In My Soul (1965), The Glory Land Way (1967), and Standing On the Rock (1969), as well as later releases like The Old Rugged Cross (album/DVD), No Depression in Heaven: The Gospel Songs of the Carter Family (2019), Come Go with Me (2023), and Made to Live Forever (2025).

The ensemble’s legacy has been formally recognized with inductions into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1998. Additionally, original members Anna Carter Gordon Davis and Rose Carter Karnes were each inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame, in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Today the Chuck Wagon Gang continues to perform under the stewardship of Shaye Smith, a granddaughter of original member Anna Carter, carrying forward the group’s distinctive vocal and instrumental tradition across new generations.
