Tennessee Ernie Ford

Tennessee Ernie Ford was a celebrated recording artist whose rich bass-baritone voice brought him success in country, pop, and gospel music. Born Ernest Jennings Ford on February 13, 1919, in Bristol, Tennessee, he began his professional radio career as an announcer at WOPI in 1937. After serving as a bombardier and bombing instructor in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, he signed with Capitol Records in 1949, eventually releasing 83 albums on the label through 1976. Early hits such as “Mule Train” (1949), “The Shotgun Boogie” (1950), and the iconic “Sixteen Tons” (1955) established his crossover appeal.

From 1956 to 1961, Ford hosted The Ford Show on NBC, where he famously closed episodes with a hymn or spiritual. This commitment to sacred music reflected a deepening turn in his career. He recorded a series of highly successful gospel and hymn albums for Capitol, including Hymns (1956), Spirituals (1957), Nearer the Cross (1959), Great Gospel Songs (1964), and Faith of Our Fathers (1967). Hymns was certified Platinum by the RIAA, while Spirituals and Nearer the Cross each earned Gold certification. His Christmas album The Star Carol (1958) also reached Platinum status.

Ford’s work in gospel music received formal recognition in 1965 when Great Gospel Songs won a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album. Later honors included the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990, and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1994. He remains remembered for bridging popular and sacred music with warmth and sincerity.
