Switchfoot is an American rock band formed in San Diego, California, in 1996. The band was founded by brothers Jon Foreman and Tim Foreman along with drummer Chad Butler. The name "Switchfoot" was taken from a surfing term, reflecting the members’ interest in the sport. Throughout their career, the band has maintained a consistent lineup that also includes Jerome Fontamillas, and they have been noted for their energetic live performances.
Switchfoot first gained significant mainstream recognition after their songs were included in the 2002 film A Walk to Remember. Their major label debut, The Beautiful Letdown (2003), featured the hit singles "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move" and went on to be certified double platinum. The band’s earlier independent albums include The Legend of Chin (1997), New Way to Be Human (1999), and Learning to Breathe (2000). They later released Nothing Is Sound (2005) and Hello Hurricane (2009).
While the band members have historically described themselves as "Christian by faith, not by genre," Switchfoot has been widely recognized within the Christian music industry. They have won 14 GMA Dove Awards and 12 San Diego Music Awards. In 2011, their album Hello Hurricane earned them a Grammy Award for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. The band has also engaged in philanthropic efforts, including work with Habitat for Humanity.
