Sue Dodge

Sue Dodge is an American Southern Gospel singer whose career has spanned decades, beginning in 1969 when she joined the group The Downings. Born Sue Ellen Chenault in Little Rock, Arkansas, she quickly made her mark in gospel music before moving on to tour for several years with the Speer Family.

Her vocal talent earned her the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year four times. While with The Downings, she recorded songs such as “I’m Free,” “I Believe What The Bible Says,” and “Jesus Is Coming Soon.” Her solo catalog includes albums like The Best of Sue Dodge, Let Me Tell You About Jesus, A Joyful Christmas, and Hymns For Times Like These, as well as her performance of “When He Was On The Cross (I Was On His Mind).”

In 1974, Sue married Amos Dodge, and the couple co-founded Capital Church in the Washington, D.C. area in 1979. She has performed in 19 countries throughout her career and is a regular participant in the Gaither Homecoming program.

Dodge has received significant honors for her contributions to gospel music. She was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Speer Family in 1998, received the “Living Legend” award from Christian Voice Magazine in 2022, and was individually inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2023.
