About Stuart Townend
Stuart Townend is an English Christian worship leader and songwriter, born in 1963 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. He is the son of a Church of England vicar and the youngest of four children. Townend began learning the piano at age seven and made a Christian commitment at age thirteen. He later studied literature at the University of Sussex and began songwriting at age twenty-two.
Townend serves as a worship leader at the Church of Christ the King in Brighton, England. He has collaborated with fellow Christian musicians Keith Getty and Lou Fellingham. Among his best-known songs is “In Christ Alone,” co-written with Keith Getty. His catalog also includes “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us,” “Beautiful Saviour,” “The King of Love,” and “The Power of the Cross.” His albums include Lord of Every Heart (2002), Monument to Mercy (2006), and Courage (2018). The albums Ruach (1994) and Beautiful Saviour (1998) each won the Christian Booksellers Convention Album of the Year award.
In 2017, Townend received the Thomas Cranmer Award for Worship from the Archbishop of Canterbury. His song “In Christ Alone” was listed in the Top 25 CCLI Songs as of 2008, reflecting its widespread use in church worship settings.
