Speers

The Speer Family, also known as The Speers, was a Southern Gospel musical group founded in 1921. The group was established in Nashville, Tennessee, by George Thomas (“Dad”) Speer and his wife, Lena Darling (“Mom”) Speer. The Speer Family is recognized as a pioneer in featuring women singers in gospel music.

The group remained active from 1921 until 1998. Its membership included family members such as Brock Speer and Rosa Nell Speer. Over its long career, the group recorded for several labels, including Heart Warming, RCA Victor, and Skylite.

The Speers released a number of albums over the decades, including Something Good Is About To Happen (1976), Between The Cross And Heaven (There’s A Whole Lot Of Living Going On) (1977), Cornerstone (1978), Interceding (1981), Hallelujah Time (1990), 70th Anniversary Celebration (1991), and He’s Still In The Fire (1991). The group received multiple Grammy nominations for Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel, or Bluegrass Gospel Album between 1976 and 1993.
