Ruben Studdard is an American R&B, pop, and gospel vocalist who rose to fame as the winner of the second season of American Idol in 2003. Born Christopher Ruben Studdard on September 12, 1978, in Frankfurt, Germany, he grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He began singing at the Rising Star Baptist Church at age three and later studied voice at Alabama A&M University.
Studdard’s debut album, Soulful, was released in 2003 and achieved platinum sales. The album produced the singles “Superstar,” “Flying Without Wings,” and “Sorry 2004.” His performance of “Superstar” earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance the same year. In 2004, he released the gospel album I Need an Angel, which reached number one on the Gospel charts and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album also topped the 2005 Billboard Year-End Gospel Albums Chart.
In 2004, Studdard received the NAACP Outstanding New Artist Award. He continued to release albums, including Love Is (2009) and Ruben Sings Luther (2018). Beyond music, he starred as Fats Waller in a national tour revival of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and appeared as a contestant on the fifteenth season of The Biggest Loser in 2013. His vocal style spans R&B, pop, and gospel, reflecting his church roots and formal training.
