About PJ Morton
PJ Morton, a Grammy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer, is a Christian and gospel musician whose work consistently reflects his deep roots in the church. Born Paul Sylvester “P.J.” Morton Jr. on March 29, 1981, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he is the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton and Dr. Debra Brown Morton, both pastors. He graduated from Morehouse College in 2003 with a degree in marketing. In 2010, he joined the pop-rock band Maroon 5 as a touring member, becoming an official member in 2012, a role he has balanced with his solo career.
Morton founded his own independent label, Morton Records, and has released a series of solo albums that blend his gospel upbringing with R&B and pop. His catalog includes New Orleans (2013), Gumbo (2017), Paul (2019), Gospel According to PJ (2020), Watch the Sun (2021), and Cape Town to Cairo (2024). Notable singles include “Only One” featuring Stevie Wonder and “How Deep Is Your Love” featuring Yebba. In 2009, he authored the book Why Can’t I Sing About Love?, addressing the intersection of faith and secular music.
Morton’s work has earned multiple Grammy Awards. He won Best Gospel Album for Gospel According to PJ in 2021, Best Traditional R&B Performance for “How Deep Is Your Love” in 2019, and Best R&B Song for “Say So” in 2019. Gospel According to PJ also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart.
Beyond recording and touring, Morton has served as an artist-in-residence at Dillard University, contributing to the cultural life of his hometown. Through his music and his independent label, he continues to navigate the space between his gospel heritage and his success in popular music.
