Patrick Charles Eugene Boone was born on June 1, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida, and became a pop singer and teen idol in the 1950s and early 1960s. During that era, he recorded hits such as “Ain’t That a Shame” (1955), “I Almost Lost My Mind” (1956), “Don’t Forbid Me” (1957), “Love Letters in the Sand” (1957), “April Love” (1957), and “Moody River” (1961). His popularity was so widespread that Billboard ranked him as one of the top charting artists between 1955 and 1995, and he once held the record for 220 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts with one or more songs. Over his career, Boone sold nearly 50 million records.
Alongside his mainstream success, Boone maintained a commitment to his Christian faith. He authored several books, including the 1958 bestseller ’Twixt Twelve and Twenty, and hosted various gospel music radio and television programs. In the 1970s, he founded the gospel-based record label Lamb & Lion Records. He has recorded more than twenty gospel albums, including Golden Treasury of Hymns and the 2014 release Legacy. In 2003, Boone was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to Christian music. He also performed at Billy Graham Crusades in 1985 and 1986, further demonstrating his lifelong dedication to sharing his faith through music.
