About Pastor Shirley Caesar
Shirley Ann Caesar-Williams, born October 13, 1938, is an American gospel singer and ordained pastor often referred to as the “First Lady of Gospel Music” and “The Queen of Gospel Music.” She began her professional recording career in 1951 at the age of 12 with the song “I’d Rather Have Jesus.” From 1958 to 1966, she was a member of the renowned gospel group The Caravans before launching a solo career that has spanned more than seven decades.
Caesar has released over forty albums, featuring songs such as “No Charge” (1975), “Jesus, I Love Calling Your Name” (1983), “Hold My Mule” (1988), “He’s Working It Out for You” (1991), “You Can Make It” (2000), “Fill This House” (2016), and “Come Jesus Come” (2025). Her work has earned her twelve Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, fifteen Dove Awards, and fourteen Stellar Awards. In 1999 she received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2000 she was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016.
Alongside her music career, Caesar has been deeply committed to ministry and community service. She founded Shirley Caesar Outreach Ministries in 1970 and served as a pastor at Mt. Calvary Word of Faith Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Shaw University in 1984 and served four years on the Durham City Council.
