Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, now officially known as The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, is a volunteer ensemble affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Founded on August 22, 1847, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the choir was originally called the Mormon Tabernacle Choir until the name was changed in October 2018. The group is based at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square.

The choir consists of approximately 360 volunteer members, all of whom must be eligible members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since 1929, the ensemble has performed a weekly devotional program titled Music & the Spoken Word, which has aired continuously. The choir has also performed at multiple U.S. presidential inaugurations.

The choir has released numerous recordings over its history, including the EP He Is Risen, the full-length George Frideric Handel: Messiah, the collaborative Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Friends, the hymn album Let Us All Press On: Hymns of Praise and Inspiration, and the EP When You Believe: A Night at the Movies.

The choir’s achievements include one Grammy Award, two Peabody Awards, and three Emmy Awards. It has also been awarded the National Medal of Arts and is a member of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
